Caron is pregnant. She is homesick. And she wants, though a Marxist, to find her Jewishness in a paradoxical way linked inextricably to Israeli statehood in Palestine. She flies to the United States. I stay in Paris a short while, think about it, and then catch a flight there too. The October War has just broken out and I am on a plane heading to the United States. What the hell am I going to do there? What am I going to do in the United States? Do people there hold demonstrations every day the way they do in Paris? Do they read the International Herald Tribune, drink grand crème, sit in cafés and talk all night, walk the streets, kiss in the metro, eat an assiette de fromage with a ballon of red wine in the afternoon, go to political rallies every other evening, and live in a city that gives shape to the poetics of an outsider’s life, and throws its shadow against every line he has written and every word he has uttered?
